Being a successful Project Manager requires a focused mindset and energy. There are many activities going into developing and executing effective projects and project management is always a challenging job. However the following characteristics are common for successful project managers.
   
 
   
1. Develop and communicate clear understanding of the project needs and requirements

Successful project managers develop clear project goals, objectives and targets. However this is just the first step towards good project management and execution. The next critical step is communicating those project goals, objectives and targets with the project team members. Without clear understanding of the overall project needs and required outcomes it is unlikely that the project will be executed successfully. 2. Define the project scope and KPIs

One of the major project requirements for the project manager is defining the project scope. This means outlining the project scope in terms of what is included and required as part of the projects. In addition project managers need to make it clear what is outside the project scope and not included as part of the particular projects. In most cases project team members make may assumptions about their roles, tasks and responsibilities and sometimes they are not a part of the project scope.

3. Setup the project budget

Part of each project plan is the project budget. Successful project managers need to allocate budget to each milestone, activity and tasks performed by the project team members. The project budget plan force project managers to consider and analyze different scenarios and approaches in order to minimize the budget and maximize the project outcomes.

4. Schedule, timing and milestones

The project schedule, the major project milestones and the timing (start and end of each task and activity) is critical for successful project management. It is not enough to finish the activities but it is crucial to deliver the project results on time. Since time is money – it is essential for project managers to consider the timing during the project budget development. Every project member needs to have a clear timing table for his role and activities.

5. Feedback, follow up and continuous communication

Project managers’ most important and critical role is continuous communication. Once the project has been started it is the project manager’s responsibility to continuously assess the project progress and gives immediate feedback and support to team members.
